Welcome back to our certification study series! If you are training to become a commercial pesticide exterminator in Ontario, mastering the Ontario Pesticide Training and Certification Core Manual is your very first step.
Today, we are diving into Section 1: Introduction. This section breaks down the basics of the licensing system, how to get certified, and the different classes of licences available. Let's review the core concepts you need to know, followed by a quick practice quiz to test your readiness!
📚 Study Notes: Certification and Licensing Basics
1. The Path to Certification Before you can hold an exterminator licence, you must pass a multiple-choice certification exam consisting of a core exam (closed book) and a licence category module (open book). You need to score at least 75% on both parts to successfully complete the examination. The main goal of this certification is to ensure that all commercial exterminators have a foundational level of competence.
2. Core Knowledge Areas As a licensed exterminator, you are required to be highly knowledgeable in several critical areas:
Safety precautions.
Proper use and handling of pesticides.
Current legislation governing pesticide use.
Integrated pest management (IPM).
Environmental protection.
3. Applying for Your Licence It's important to remember that certification is not the same as a licence. Once you pass your exam, you will receive a letter of certification from the University of Guelph Ridgetown Campus. This letter is only valid for one year from the date you passed. You must apply to the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks for your official pesticide exterminator licence within that one-year window. Once issued, your exterminator licence is valid for five years.
4. The Three Main Licence Types The Ontario Pesticide Licensing System features three primary types of licences:
Operator’s Licence: Allows the holder to operate a commercial pesticide application business (valid for 1 year).
Vendor’s Licence: Allows the holder to sell or transfer pesticides (valid for 5 years). This comes in three classes: General Vendor, Limited Vendor, and Treated Seed Vendor.
Exterminator’s Licence: Authorizes you to actually perform the extermination (valid for 5 years). There are 15 different classes of exterminator licences, broken down into three major pest management areas: Land, Structural, and Water.
